Olympic Tennis 2012: Roger Federer Is on Track to Win Olympic Gold
World No. 1 Roger Federer continues his quest for Olympic gold in men's singles Wednesday, as he takes on Uzbek Denis Istomin on Centre Court in the round of 16.
After overcoming the jitters in the first round to squeeze out a three-set win over Colombian Alejandro Falla, Federer coasted to a straight-set win over Julien Benneteau, the same man who pushed Federer to five sets at Wimbledon just a few weeks ago.
The Olympic gold singles medal is one of the few achievements to elude Federer in his illustrious career. He hasn't been shy to let the public know how much this title would mean to him either, especially with this year's games being played at the venue where he made his grand slam breakthrough.
Spanish David Ferrer and Serbian Janko Tipsarevic are the highest-ranked players in Federer's half of the draw—two players that Federer is a combined 18-0 against.
If Federer can advance to the final, a potential Wimbledon rematch against world No. 2Novak Djokovic or world No. 4 Andy Murray awaits. Both players will be eager to avenge their losses from last month and add a gold medal to their collection.
Federer, who won gold at the Beijing Olympics in doubles, will also take on Israeli team Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram with partner Stanislas Wawrinka in doubles as they continue their quest to defend their gold medal.
